Gottman Couple Therapy
What is Gottman Couple Therapy?
Relationship and marriage therapy; unlike individual psychotherapy, focuses on family/relationship dynamics and the effects of these dynamics on psychological well-being. A relationship of mutual trust and transparency is established between the psychotherapist and spouses, and the psychotherapist approaches the spouses at equal distance. With unconditional positive acceptance, spouses are enabled to open up in a safe environment without feeling judged. In relationship and marriage therapy, not individuals but how individuals' behaviors affect the family system is examined. Therefore, rather than diagnosing a family member, the reflection of that family member's relationship style with other individuals on the family is addressed. Gottman couple therapy is an integrative therapy. While focusing on the couple's emotions, it also focuses on conflicts between couples, thoughts, the history of the relationship and individual pasts. It is based on Dr. John Gottman's research that started in 1970 and continues to this day. Couple therapy with the Gottman method consists of four parts: Relationship Assessment Process, Therapy Process, Monitoring Process, Termination Process
